I have to admit, as great and remarkable band Radiohead has been to me personally and to whole world, I pretty much over listened their…everything. I haven’t been able to listen completely Radiohead album for a very long time. How ever this event had my full attention today.

A mysterious song has floated out of the ether and onto the interwebs, and apparently it’s a new Radiohead song. Consequence of Sound reports that “These Are My Twisted Words” appeared on the message board of the Radiohead fan site At Ease earlier today with no explanation. Though it sure sounds like a Radiohead song, there’s not any confirmation that it actually is.

Very interesting. Brilliant marketing or just an accident? I don’t believe in accidents.

Worth of reading even if you are not related to music industry. The fact is that digital media is changing the world no matter what your business is, the guestion is how are you going to deal with it and take the benefit.

Here is the full post by Trent Reznor:

[disclaimer]
This was written on a bumpy Euro-bus ride across the wilderness – may ramble a bit but I think the point gets across.
TR

I posted a message on Twitter yesterday stating I thought The Beastie Boys and TopSpin Media “got it right” regarding how to sell music in this day and age. Here’s a link to their store:

[illcommunication.beastieboys.com]

Shortly thereafter, I got some responses from people stating the usual “yeah, if you’re an established artist – what if you’re just trying to get heard?” argument. In an interview I did recently this topic came up and I’ll reiterate what I said here.

If you are an unknown / lesser-known artist trying to get noticed / established:

Establish your goals. What are you trying to do / accomplish? If you are looking for mainstream super-success (think Lady GaGa, Coldplay, U2, Justin Timberlake) – your best bet in my opinion is to look at major labels and prepare to share all revenue streams / creative control / music ownership. To reach that kind of critical mass these days your need old-school marketing muscle and that only comes from major labels. Good luck with that one.

If you’re forging your own path, read on.

Forget thinking you are going to make any real money from record sales. Make your record cheaply (but great) and GIVE IT AWAY. As an artist you want as many people as possible to hear your work. Word of mouth is the only true marketing that matters.
To clarify:
Parter with a TopSpin or similar or build your own website, but what you NEED to do is this – give your music away as high-quality DRM-free MP3s. Collect people’s email info in exchange (which means having the infrastructure to do so) and start building your database of potential customers. Then, offer a variety of premium packages for sale and make them limited editions / scarce goods. Base the price and amount available on what you think you can sell. Make the packages special – make them by hand, sign them, make them unique, make them something YOU would want to have as a fan. Make a premium download available that includes high-resolution versions (for sale at a reasonable price) and include the download as something immediately available with any physical purchase. Sell T-shirts. Sell buttons, posters… whatever.

Don’t have a TopSpin as a partner? Use Amazon for your transactions and fulfillment. [www.amazon.com]

Use TuneCore to get your music everywhere. [www.tunecore.com]

Have a realistic idea of what you can expect to make from these and budget your recording appropriately.
The point is this: music IS free whether you want to believe that or not. Every piece of music you can think of is available free right now a click away. This is a fact – it sucks as the musician BUT THAT’S THE WAY IT IS (for now). So… have the public get what they want FROM YOU instead of a torrent site and garner good will in the process (plus build your database).

The Beastie Boys’ site offers everything you could possibly want in the formats you would want it in – available right from them, right now. The prices they are charging are more than you should be charging – they are established and you are not. Think this through.

The database you are amassing should not be abused, but used to inform people that are interested in what you do when you have something going on – like a few shows, or a tour, or a new record, or a webcast, etc.
Have your MySpace page, but get a site outside MySpace – it’s dying and reads as cheap / generic. Remove all Flash from your website. Remove all stupid intros and load-times. MAKE IT SIMPLE TO NAVIGATE AND EASY TO FIND AND HEAR MUSIC (but don’t autoplay). Constantly update your site with content – pictures, blogs, whatever. Give people a reason to return to your site all the time. Put up a bulletin board and start a community. Engage your fans (with caution!) Make cheap videos. Film yourself talking. Play shows. Make interesting things. Get a Twitter account. Be interesting. Be real. Submit your music to blogs that may be interested. NEVER CHASE TRENDS. Utilize the multitude of tools available to you for very little cost of any – Flickr / YouTube / Vimeo / SoundCloud / Twitter etc.

If you don’t know anything about new media or how people communicate these days, none of this will work. The role of an independent musician these days requires a mastery of first hand use of these tools. If you don’t get it – find someone who does to do this for you. If you are waiting around for the phone to ring or that A & R guy to show up at your gig – good luck, you’re going to be waiting a while.

Hope this helps, and I’ll scour responses for intelligent comments I can respond to.

Mass posting day in Gossip Room. I blame social networks which today seems to be full of over interesting talk about what’s going on in the world of noises. Dear Twitter bird, what would I do without you…Here comes the news.

The Raveonettes are giving fans the opportunity to hear early demos of tracks from their as-yet-untitled forthcoming album. The Danish duo made an announcement via Twitter yesterday (June 10) that they were releasing their first demo with the working title ‘Last Dance’ at Tinyurl.com/newraves.

Today they posted another demo with the title ‘Boys Who Rape’. The band told fans that they “can’t wait to hear what you think” and added, “these are DEMOS and still in the making.”The Raveonettes intend to continue to solicit feedback from fans throughout the making of their follow up to 2008′s ‘Lust Lust Lust’.

Did you get this ladies and gents? Coolest thing ever! You can take a part of recording process. If you want more guitars just let them know! Nice.

This is why I am getting more and more into Twitter. This is why I like Amanda Palmer. Public E-Mail of the day:

From: Amanda Palmer
Subject: re-Please Drop Me

my label-dropping game has become very fun. please pray for me.

it’s a lesson in how the future of music is working -
fans are literally (and i mean that….literally) lining up at the signing table after shows and HANDING me cash, saying “thank you”.

i had to EXPLAIN to the so-called “head of digital media” of roadrunner australia WHAT TWITTER WAS. and his brush-off that “it hasn’t caught on here yet” was ABSURD because the next day i twittered that i was doing an impromptu gathering in a public park and 12 hours later, 150 underage fans – who couldn’t attend the show – showed up to get their records signed.

no manager knew! i didn’t even warn or tell her! no agents! no security! no venue! we were in a fucking public park!
life is becoming awesome.

also interesting: i brought a troupe of back-up actors/dancers on the tour (we were only playing 300-1000 seaters) and had no money to pay them, so we passed the hat into the crowd every night. each performer walked from each show with about $200 in cash. the fans TOOK CARE OF THEM. they brought us dinner every night, gave us places to sleep. (i couldn’t afford to put up that many people in hotels). all sans label, all using email and twitter. the fans followed the adventure. they LOVED HELPING.

so?
the times they are a-changing fucking dramatically, when pong-twittering with trent reznor means way more to your fan-base/business than whether or not the record is in fucking stores (and in my case, it ain’t in fucking stores).

twitter is EVERYTHING that you explain in your rants: it is a MAINLINE insta-connection with the fans. there is ZERO middleman.
my fans hung out with me all day on twitter today while i unpacked weird tour shit, fan art, gifts and paraphernalia that usually just ends up in my closet or in the trash and took pictures of it for them.

Class, can I have your attention!! Weekend is not quite here so please have enough strength for one more lecture and then you are free to go. Take your papers and pens, I’ll keep exam about todays case study later on next week. I’ll announce date and classroom in Monday.

On todays topic we go backwards to my previous post about finding new business model for Portishead. Now we take a deeper look to NIN example model we spoke about in Wednesday. I am elaborating this case also in my grad work. Musician Trent Reznor has been experimenting with a variety of new and unique business models for his band, Nine Inch Nails, to reach and connect with target group. Todays case study explores Reznor’s experiments, examining what has worked and what has not – and why.
Our quest Speaker is Michael Masnick (Editor/President & CEO, Techdirt Blog/Floor64)

And please…in back of the auditory, STOP MAKING PAPER PLANES!!! I ask for your attention, please!! Now Mr Masnick continues…

Portishead, an experimental-pop group and pioneers of the early 90s electronica movement, announced yesterday that they are now “free agents”, having completed their three record deal with Island Records. The band is looking at new ways to sell their music and are reaching out to their fans for advice:

with the world being the way it is there are lots of options open……but if you lot have any bright ideas of how we should sell our music in the future lets us know , why not!

i dont think that were into giving out music away for free to be honest…it [...] takes ages to write and we have to heat our swimming pools…..!!!

Immediate response from Creative Commons: While Portishead mention an aversion to giving away music for free, thoughts immediately turned to a CC+ licensing model similar to what Nine Inch Nails used in marketing Ghosts I-IV and The Slip this past year. NIN gave away their music for free under a CC BY-NC-SA license, but they also found immediate and substantial financial return as well as seeing their long-term sales flourish.

NIN achieved this by selling different versions of the same content; there was the initial free download of the first nine tracks of Ghosts, but fans could also purchase a $5 download of the whole album, a $10 2xCD set, a $75 DVD box set, and finally, a limited edition $300 ultra-deluxe box set signed and numbered by Trent himself, all of it CC licensed. Given the notoriety of Portishead fans, something tells us that if the band were to offer a $300 unreleased album in an ultra-deluxe box set in conjunction with freely licensed versions of the same music, it would probably sell out just as quick as NIN’s 2,500 copies did.

So there are indeed ways to make money while giving music away for free – its all about connecting with their fans via CC, and giving them an easy way to support the band. This is exactly the same I’ve been saying in my grad project. Someone just read my mind in Creative Commons…anyway, very interesting to see how things will develop and this is the topic I’ll come back on later. First I have to contrive my full response to group, I got some further ideas regarding to CC.

Gossip of the day, this is important so I made a rip off from TwentyFourBit.com:

A cryptic message left on Trent Reznor’s rumored Twitter account is starting to make a lot more sense now that Reznor has posted studio pictures on the official Nine Inch Nails site. The photos, which Reznor captioned “a look at something else that’s been going on” parts 1-4, show Jane’s Addiction members Eric Avery, Stephen Perkins, and Dave Navarro in a recording studio. The photo of Navarro (see above) shows Reznor in the studio as well.

On January 28th, Reznor posted, “In the studio. Not with NIN,” on his rumored Twitter. In light of these photos of him with three out of four members of Jane’s Addiction, it is quite possible he is producing an upcoming Jane’s addiction album, which would be their first with original bassist, Eric Avery, since 1991.

The official Jane’s Addiction website says they are planning a show in Los Angeles soon and has a blog section called “In The Studio” that has yet to be updated. Check out NIN.com for Reznor’s latest photo updates or see the photo of Avery and Perkins by clicking here.
